Heart Therapy

There are a lot of things that aren’t spoken about enough, you know? People go through many things in their one lifetime, and they don’t always leave a positive impact on them. I’m a firm believer that in order to resolve some issues, they need to be spoken about and shared with someone else, no matter how hard or uncomfortable it may be. I’ve realized that people will spend more time ridiculing and frowning upon certain issues that people face rather than addressing them the way they ought to be. There’s no sympathy, empathy, patience, or understanding. How can you expect a person to heal and overcome their hardships if you don’t provide support and a safe environment for them to do so? Well, allow me to get personal…

Take the heart, for instance. A fist-sized muscle that gives us life (both literally and figuratively), but can also cause the most pain. Just as one would go to a hospital for physical heart issues, they should also seek proper treatment and care for their heart in the figurative sense—the emotional sense. Our bodies house our hearts, and our hearts house our feelings. A temple within a temple. Proverbs 4:23 NLT tells us to guard our hearts, for it determines the course of our lives. In most cases, if not all, it is very necessary for us to protect our hearts. Not everyone deserves access to it and for that very reason, many people prefer to not let others in easily. But what about those instances when the condition of your heart requires openness and understanding from others? What about when your heart needs therapy?

Now… what is heart therapy and why do people need it? Therapy is treatment intended to relieve and/or heal and is often distributed in clinical facilities. In this case, heart therapy, aka the healing and relief of the heart, can come from a variety of sources…

Professional clinical help. Spiritual faith. Trusted friends and family. Creative outlets. And more.

Pain is pain, and emotional pain in the heart can sometimes be too much. Whether you are suffering from stress, loss, grief, heartbreak, disappointment, etc., the health of your heart should always be taken into account. The signs of possibly needing heart therapy are more obvious than most people think. Some of them include, but are not limited to:

  • constant depression or depressive episodes
  • suicidal thoughts and being overwhelmed
  • physical effects (chest pain, high blood pressure, lethargy in the body, migraines, etc.)
  • loss of interest and social isolation
  • intrusive negative and pessimistic thoughts
  • feelings of hopelessness (“I can’t…,” “What’s the point…?”)
  • emotional breakdowns/episodes
  • and the list goes on…

Life can indeed be rough, but that does not mean that you have to live a hard life. And yes, many things that happen in life can be out of our own control, but you are in control of how you let something affect you. This does NOT mean to be heartless and unresponsive to the events and people around you. It is okay to feel. It is okay to worry, be sad, or upset from time to time. It is okay to cry. But what’s important is that you don’t stay there. There is always a way out. Your resilience in life knocking you down and getting back up not only benefits you, but the people around you.

The health of your heart, your happiness, and peace of mind MATTER. No one is meant to go through this life alone, as cliché as that may sound. Confiding in trusted and loved ones, establishing open and effective communication, and letting your feelings be heard are great steps towards a happier heart and lifestyle. In a world that doesn’t care about your feelings, you can always find people who will. Love yourself enough to make it happen.
